The Laughing Cow story began in 1865 in an ancient monastery in France where Jules Bel, a local businessman, founded a small cheese business.
During the war, when the French military experienced low morale, they held a drawing contest to assign an emblem to each military unit. The unit of Léon, one of Jules’ sons, was assigned an emblem of a laughing ox head, which would eventually provide inspiration for The Laughing Cows logo.
When the war ended, Léon returned to the cheese business. He wanted a name for his new company that would have mass appeal, and decided on “La Vache qui rit”, or in English, “The Laughing Cow”.
Cows often symbolize your mother, or motherhood, in the way a mother cow protects and gives an abundant supply of milk.

Richard Joshua Reynolds, the founder of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, introduced Camel cigarettes in 1913. Camel cigarettes contain a blend of Turkish and Virginian tobacco. The camel symbol was chosen because the cigarettes were made with Turkish tobacco.
The camel in the logo is of the dromedary variety. In languages other than English, a distinction is made between camels and dromedaries, so the name and image do not coincide everywhere.

In 1906, William Ramsay developed a boot polish to which he gave the name ‘Kiwi’. The choice of the name was a tribute to William’s wife who was a native of New Zealand, home of the Kiwi bird and New Zealand’s national emblem. During Ramsay’s visit to New Zealand he had noticed the odd, wingless birds. The kiwi bird design looked good on the small round tin, and the name was easy to see and attractive to look at.

Benjamin Hirsch, the founder of Turtle Wax, wanted to be a chemist, but had to drop out of college during the Great Depression, but he never lost his interest in chemistry nor his fascination with cars. In the late 1930s he developed a car wax and mixed up batches at night in the bathtub. He named the wax Plastone.
To promote Plastone, Hirsch would go into a parking lots and shine one fender of each car. He then waited for the owners to arrive and hope to convince them to buy his wax to finish the job. Plastone was a couple of years old when, according to company lore, Hirsch made a sales call in Turtle Creek, Wisconsin. The name of the town got stuck in his mind. From that day on Plastone was renamed Super Hard Shell, referring to the hard shell of the turtle and the company became Turtle Wax.
The turtle is an ancient symbol, representing order, creation, endurance, strength, stability, longevity, fertility, and a gentle Innocence.
